An Outdoor Education Program for Cotswold 5th Graders
What is Camp Hanes?
Fifth Graders at Cotswold Elementary have the opportunity to participate a long and much loved tradition, the fall camp trip. The 2016 trip is scheduled for Nov 2-4. Camp Hanes is a YMCA Camp located at the base of Sauratown Mountain near King, N.C.
What happens at Camp Hanes?
Trained, outdoor leadership staff with first aid and CPR certifications lead campers in experiential outdoor education programs. The program places participants in settings and situations that foster character development and the acquisition of practical living skills, and expand personal confidence. The activities are designed to be physically safe but do contain emotional and physical challenges.
What is Outdoor Education?
The Outdoor Education Program at Camp Hanes offers students a chance to participate in hands-on classes that develop teamwork skills, build self-esteem and are fun. On over 400 acres of fields, forests, lakes and mountains, students are encouraged to understand and experience the relationship between themselves and the natural environment. The acticivies include a high ropes course, climbing tower and challenge course and nature hikes.
How do students get to Camp Hanes and do they stay overnight?
Charter buses transport the students to the camp for this two-night, three-day outdoor education program. They stay in modern, clean and heated bunk-style cabins. The cabins include indoor bathroom facilities with individual hot showers. The lodge, with a large natural stone fireplace, serves as the dining hall and site for indoor workshops and evening activities.
Is there a cost to attend Camp Hanes?
Yes, the cost is for each camper will be $50. This amount pays for part of the camp tuition and chartered bus transportation. The Cotswold PTA pays the remaining costs.
Are there Scholarships? and How can I contribute? It is the goal of the Cotswold PTA to send every student to Camp Hanes who wants to participate with parental authorization. The annual Boosterthon fundraiser helps finance a portion of camp and travel expenses for every 5th grade student. The PTA will help support families who need help with the additional cost of the trip through scholarships. Please contact School Counselor, Tara Bowers, at 980-343-6720 or by email at email@example.com, no later than Friday, Oct. 14 if you need scholarship support. Special thanks to the generous Cotswold families who have contributed to Camp Hanes Scholarships. If you would like to help support this scholarship effort please send your gift in an envelope marked “Camp Hanes Scholarship” to the attention of Allison Dawson.
