Dear Cougar Families:
Cotswold is an ever-growing school. Over the last ten years, the school has remained the same but the size of the student body has doubled. As the size has increased, the needs have increased – much more than the school budget can address. Thankfully, our PTA is able to be supportive. We host two major fundraisers a year – Commit to Cotswold in the fall and Boosterthon in the spring – right now! While Commit to Cotswold tends to be a parent driven fundraiser, Boosterthon affords our students a fun opportunity to get involved physically and understand that they are also an important part of helping Cotswold succeed! All of the Commit to Cotswold monies and a large portion of the Boosterthon monies directly benefit the school.
Here are some of the ways your contributions have supported our school . . .
Several professional development and training events for our teachers, staff retreat to address planning goals, staff appreciation events, new microphones for use at school events, snacks for children in the afterschool reading camp, financial support for field trips, soccer goals, a volleyball net, school beautification internally and externally, Friday Clubs, support to the school Houses, Phil Morgan event for fourth grade, school Meet and Eat meals & performance/events, weekly readers for students and agendas, financial support for the mentoring program and basketball team. Additionally, more than ten thousand dollars was given to subsidize the fifth grade Camp Hanes trip.
But, there are more ways we can help! Remember, while our population has grown, our school’s physical structure has remained the same. This means there are more children learning within our walls and playing in our courtyards.
A little more than ten years ago the courtyard, in between the kindergarten and fourth grade hallways, was turned into a reflective garden to honor a former student who had passed away – Clare Porter. The PTA and Clare’s family worked together to create a peaceful, natural area for children to enjoy, filled with grassy areas, slate & concrete pathways, and beautifully carved wooden structures. Over the years, with increased usage and issues with the drainage system, the garden has struggled. In order to honor Clare’s memory, we talked with the Porters about moving her garden to a quieter part of the campus, the courtyard between the second and third grade hallways. The wooden structures are currently being refurbished and a garden design is in process of being approved. Once it is installed, this new space could be used by classrooms to teach IB lessons about reflection, mentors to spend time with their mentees and tutors to review classroom information with their students (to name a few examples).
Additionally, we will update the former garden space, now known as the Cougar Courtyard. Those plans are currently being refined but do include assessing & addressing the drainage issues, removing & adding durable foliage and installing multiple areas of interest for the children.
These campus improvements will likely occur in stages and will be supported by donations from our families and friends. Commit to Cotswold and Boosterthon will significantly help in these efforts! Please continue to give back to the school. It all helps in so many ways!
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions or concerns.
Thank you for your support of our school,
Morgan Cromwell, PTA President
