The Mecklenburg PTA Council will host a meeting for parents and PTA leaders on February 26, at the Metro School, 405 S. Davidson Street, Charlotte, NC 28202. All parents and interested members of the community are invited to attend.
The morning meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration and light refreshments. Dr. Peter Gorman and members of his executive staff including CMS Chief Financial Officer, Sheila Shirley, will present the preliminary budget proposal for the 2011-2012 school year. Eric Davis, Chairman of the Mecklenburg County School Board, will also be in attendance. This year’s school budget will include significant reductions that are necessary due to projected shortfalls in education funding. A brief question and answer period will follow the presentation. Mecklenburg Citizens for Education, (www.MeckEd.org), will follow with a presentation of how the CMS budget is constructed, the different sources and limitations of funding, and the lengthy process of assembling all of these components into a working school system budget.
Mecklenburg PTA Council is affiliated with the NCPTA and the National PTA, as a local support organization for PTA/PTSAs in Mecklenburg county. Our board is made up of current and former PTA officers and represents all areas of the county, and reaches out to PTAs and the community to promote parent involvement in support of education.
Joni Trobich, current Mecklenburg PTA Council president, would like to invite all parents and interested community members to attend. Ms. Trobich suggests that, “Understanding the proposed budget and how the various funding components are assembled into a school system budget will help us all to be fuller partners in the discussion of how to ensure all children reach their highest educational potential.”
The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 12 noon on Saturday, February 26, 2011. Free parking will be available at the CMS Education Center parking lot across the street (please use entrances on Martin Luther King Boulevard) from Metro School.
